New Mark Kinzer Book Coming

MJTI President Mark Kinzer, whose most recent book, Postmissionary Messianic Judaism, was published in 2005, is about to release another book in 2010. Israel’s Messiah and the People of God will be a collection of essays by Mark Kinzer, edited by Jen Rosner, a PhD candidate at Fuller Theological Seminary.

The book begins with biographical reflection, including a little about Dr. Kinzer’s grandfather who was a Talmud scholar. From charting a course for theology in the Messianic Jewish movement to exploring issues such as Jewish prayer, oral tradition, eschatol- ogy, final destinies, and reflection on reactions to Postmissionary Messianic Judaism, the upcoming volume promises to start many conversations in the Messianic Jewish community and beyond in Christian and mainstream Jewish circles.

In the Introduction, Jen Rosner comments on the faith and theology she sees expressed in Dr. Kinzer’s life and writings:

For Kinzer, Yeshua is not just someone who gets tacked on to a vibrant Jewish faith—Yeshua is at the heart of that faith, giving it its true texture and its deepest meaning.

Indeed, Dr. Kinzer’s vision, which continues to shape the mission of MJTI, is that Yeshua is the center. While it may seem that Messianic Judaism should be about Yeshua plus Judaism or Judaism plus Yeshua, it is really about Judaism rooted in Yeshua. The education MJTI pro- vides is not Jewish studies plus Christian theology, but a whole new field which draws on both while making its own unique contribution.

Israel’s Messiah and the People of God will be available in early 2010 and Verge readers will be among the first to know of its release.
